Frequently Asked Questions
If your questions are not answered below, please feel free to send us an email and we would be only too happy to help provide further information.
Do you cater for special dietary requirements?
Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements in your application. We endeavour to cater to your dietary needs. Meal plans are made available 24 hours before each meal so that you can raise any requests or concerns. We have a fully stocked pantry and we are sure we can work together to make sure you are well catered for.
How long should I stay?
Having recently spent 4 weeks painting at the Florence Academy of Art, Johanna knows all too well how quickly time can pass. The four weeks felt like the blink of an eye. Johanna would suggest the longer the better. If you can only come for a week then we will help you to make the most of your week. Bear in mind that a few outings, a trip into town and a dinner out can really cut into your creative practice time. That’s not to say that interacting with other creatives is not equally as important as working on your project, but if time and money permit, we would suggest 2 to 4 weeks to make the most of your experience.
Are you wheelchair/disability friendly?
Unfortunately all the bedrooms are on the 1st floor and there is no lift. The Greenhills Art Centre is a heritage listed building and as such is not wheelchair friendly. Residents will need to be able to comfortably manage stairs. Assistance with your bags is available.
Language Spoken
Whilst we welcome residents from all over the globe the first language of the centre is English. It is not essential that you speak English (although communication might be a little difficult) all applications must be submitted in English.
Can groups or collaborations apply?
We are open to collaborative applications. If you would like to apply as a group, please select this option on the application form to apply together. Please be aware that due to the limit on accommodation it is possible you might be asked to share a room. This option will be discussed with you during the application process.
How will I get to the Centre?
We offer all international and interstate artists in residence a pickup and drop off from Perth airport/hotel. We also offer weekly lifts to the grocery store and on day excursions. There is no art supply shop nearby. Art supplies need to be supplied by the artist or pre ordered 6 weeks prior to the residency. We strongly recommend hiring your own car as a resident. Part of Greenhills Art Centre is its relative remoteness; however, this makes it difficult to access anywhere off-site. Having your own vehicle is convenient but not essential.
Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended and is not included in the residency fees.

What disciplines do you accept?
We accept applications from all creatives in different stages of their creative journey.
Can I bring my family/partner?
We are not able to accommodate children at the residency. Partners, where both are creatives, are encouraged to apply. Partners where one is a creative and the other is not can still apply, however we would ask you to outline this in your application and indicate how your partner plans to spend their days at the residency. There is plenty to see and do in the area if you have a car, otherwise there are a number of quiet nooks and crannies to wile away the hours reading a couple of good books etc.
Will I have access to a studio?
There is a 250sqm shared air-conditioned studio space that is equipped with easels, tables, chairs, and a print press. There is also a number of outdoor areas where you can set up to paint etc. We do not allow painting in the heritage listed main building.
What is living at the residency like?
The building is 120 years old however, it has been renovated and includes many modern conveniences without losing its charm and elegance. The showers are hot, the beds are comfortable, and the food is plentiful. We want your experience here to be something special. A lot of thought and details has gone into making your stay as comfortable as we can. There is air conditioning in every room, electric blankets in the beds, and free wi-fi throughout the building. The nights are cold and old buildings such as this can be rather cold during winter so you will need some warm clothing. Even in the warmers months you can expect some cool nights.
There are fireplaces in the main living areas and the studio and a fire pit outside (winter months only).
What other costs should I expect?
Snacks outside of those provided (see inclusions here), drinks (alcohol, etc) restaurant meals including drinks. We have hand made artist quality canvases and linen panels for sale at a discount price.
Do you sell art supplies?
We have a canvas and framing shop on site. Frames and canvases are for sale at a reduced price. We may occasionally have some very limited art supplies for sale; however, artists need to bring all required materials as additional supplies are not guaranteed. If you need us to purchase art supplies on your behalf, please let us know 6 weeks prior to your visit and we can have them here ready on your arrival.
What is the Climate like?
Summers days are hot. Summer nights can be hot and occasionally cool. The winters can be cold, and older houses do tend to be cooler. We have air-conditioning, electric blankets and fireplaces to ensure your stay is comfortable.
How do I get my artwork home?
Johanna has recently experienced this when flying home from Italy with wet oil paintings. It is possible and we can help you to safely prepare your items for travel.
How to travel with oil paint?
Having recently travelled back and forth to Italy from Australia, Johanna can email you some suggestions for traveling with oil paints.
Is there an age restriction for participants?
Applicants must be 18 years or older.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
