Greenhills Art Centre

History

The Greenhills Art Centre is a superb double storey Federation style building, built in 1906. Originally called the Railway Hotel and built by one of the first female publicans in Western Australia, Mary Ann McMullen

In it’s heyday, Greenhills town consisted of over 2,000 people and was the end of the line for the train to Kalgoorlie. This was the third pub to be built in Greenhills and was directly opposite the railway station.

From 1906 – 1946 the Railway Hotel saw fourteen licensees and in 1954 the name changed to the Sedgemore Hotel by Mr Clyde Easthaugh. It remained a hotel until 1989 when the liquor license was sold separately to Point Samson for $100,000 and the building was sold for $60,000.

Without a liquor license, it was a private residence from 1989 – 1996 for Kim and Tania and four years operational as a school dormitory campsite.

In 1996 the hotel was in disrepair and facing possible demolition. Thankfully it was sold by private treaty to John and Ashley, known locally as ‘the boys’. They had the means to renovate the building, furnish it with antiques, and bring back the liquor license, The name was changed to the Greenhills Tavern, and later changed to Greenhills Inn.

When the “boys” sold the property, it again had several owners and lessees who sold a lot of the antiques over the time. By 2014 Greenhills Inn was once again very run down and only open on weekends. There were ten work orders on the building.

The property was sold to Apryl and Rodney, with a vision to renovate. They later sold the property to its former owners who had the property for just over 3 years. In 2024 the property was once again sold without a liquor license to Greg and Johanna Larkin to become the Greenhills Art Centre.

The Greenhills Art Centre operates a residency programme and workshops from April to November each year in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia. Located 15 minutes from York and 90 minutes from Perth, the centre offers artists 1-to-4-week residencies with onsite accommodation in one of 8 period feature guest bedrooms. Guests have the use of a formal lounge, dining room, three shared bathroom and three shared toilet facilities upstairs and other four showers and toilets downstairs. There is also a large wrap around verandah, games room, bar area and a 250sqm working studio for use by the residents during their stay.  The residency includes full board (excluding possibly one meal in town). Meals are prepared in the on-site commercial kitchen. There is free wi-fi , laundry, and 24-hour access to the large air-conditioned studio.  Plein air painters/sketchers also have the opportunity to visit local historical sites. For artists selected, the residency provides time and space for self-led projects. Social interactions, creativity, and collaboration underscore life at Greenhills and residents are an integral part of the expanded community during their stay. Further facilities include an onsite framer, handmade quality canvases, and fine art printing facilities at wholesale prices.

The Greenhills Art Centre provides a perfect environment to foster creative thinking with the opportunity to interact with other artists or to find a quiet corner for those looking for a little solitude during the day.

The objective is to provide a beautiful and transformative experience for residents. A place to not only create art, but to recharge, inspire and to make life-long memories.
